  • Who can attend?

    Any high school student is welcome to apply! If you're in middle school, you may attend if you are at least 13 years old. Absolutely no coding experience is necessary.

  • What if I've never been to a hackathon before?

    You can let us be your first :) In fact, hackMHS is designed with first-time hackers in mind, with many mentors and workshops to guide you along the way!

  • How much does it cost?

    Nothing at all! hackMHS is completely free to all participants. While you're here, you'll get free food and free stuff.

  • Will you provide travel reimbursement?

    Sorry, we're currently unable to provide travel reimbursement.

  • How long will the event last?

    hackMHS will last Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. The hacking period will be 24 hours.

  • I'm a parent concerned about safety. Is hackMHS safe?

    Yes! hackMHS is definitely safe. all 24 hours of the event there are adult chaperones onsite monitoring the event. Along with that, Millburn High School is a safe location with night time security.

  • Do students sleep overnight?

    Students are encouraged, although not required, to stay overnight as part of the hackathon experience. There will be designated quiet areas for sleeping. If you are uncomfortable staying overnight, you may be picked up by a parent.

  • When are applications open?

    Applications are currently open, Registration is linked below click here

  • What should I bring?

    Bring your laptop, phone, chargers, a sleeping bag (if desired), and excitement about learning new things!

  • How will you decide between applicants?

    Participants will be selected by a random lottery. Each round of accepted students will have 2-3 days to RSVP.

  • Do I need to join a team beforehand?

    Nope! We encourage you to meet new students during team formation at the beginning of the event. We recommend you form a team of up to 4 students.

  • I have a question that isn't answered here.

  • Where is it?

    hackMHS IV is located at the Millburn High School (462 Millburn Ave). It is accessible via exit 9A on Route 24, which can be accessed via Exit 48 via I-78 Express

Splash

Millburn Splash is an afternoon of mini, interactive classes for students in grades 1-8, taught by students at Millburn High School. The classes cover a wide variety of topics, from origami to entrepreneurship to robotics!

Workshop Descriptions
  • Intro to Programming in Java

    Want to learn how to code? You’ve come to the right place! Learn key concepts in programming, including variables, if-statements, loops, and more, using the popular language Java. This course will provide a welcoming environment that will allow attendees to explore the language with guidance and collaboration. Please download Netbeans (Java EE) ahead of time.

  • Advanced Java/Software Design

    So you know basic Java, what next? This workshop will teach you the next steps, covering object-oriented programming including classes, inheritance, polymorphism, and how to use these principles to create a powerful and flexible backend software design. Please download Netbeans (Java EE) ahead of time.

  • Web Design: HTML & CSS

    Learn the fundamentals of HTML and CSS, languages that define the content, layout, and style of modern web pages. Please download the trial version of sublime ahead of time as well as chrome or firefox.

  • Javascript and APIs

    Now that you know HTML and CSS, you can learn the last piece of the front-end web development puzzle: Javascript! Javascript makes websites interactive. Application programming interfaces (APIs) help developers retrieve and manipulate data from other sources such as spotify. Please create a spotify account ahead of time, download the trial version of sublime, and download node.js, as well as chrome or firefox.

  • iOS

    Learn how to create iOS apps! This intro class will be taught in Swift with XCode. Requirements: Mac Laptop with XCode Installed (can be found on Mac App Store), basic programming knowledge

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Graphic Design

    With the skills you’ll learn in this workshop, you will be able to create graphic design. From learning how to improve user experience, to the basics of photoshop, you will be able to use the skills you learn for your coding projects. Please download the free trial for Photoshop beforehand.

  • Engineering Sketching

    Interested in improving your skills in visualization and design, and exploring skills in mechanical engineering? Practice and expand your visualization, and learn the industry standards for presenting engineering drawings, including how to design and draw 3D parts to send to professional manufacturers.
